Canonteign Manor is located in Christow, South Devon, England. The property as it looks today has existed since 1586. However, its entire history dates back almost 900 years.
During the English Civil War the property was used as a garrison by the King, then later taken by Thomas Fairfax.
After the English Civil War the manor was owned by the Davy family, in 1812 Sir Edward Pellew, later Lord Viscount Exmouth, purchased the manor and it became a farm after 1828 when Exmouth built another large property close by.
It wasn’t until the 1970s when the property was restored by restored Lady Exmouth. During the last few years, the ancient house has been brought into the 21st century with extensive and sympathetic renovations.
The manor stands in 10 acres of landscaped gardens and grazing land, the property is accessed by pair of large electric wooden gates that open onto the gravel driveway.
The house features two staircases that lead to the bedrooms on the first floor.
The formal dining room features a stone floor and wood paneling with a large open fireplace.
The second dining area also features some wood paneling and a large fireplace.
The formal sitting room, featuring stunning windows and yet another fireplace.
Two other, less formal, sitting rooms can also be found on the ground floor, both of which feature more wood paneling and their own fireplaces.
The two largest bedrooms can be found at either end of the house. They both currently house large four-poster beds.
The third and fourth bedrooms are also of generous size, there are six further bedrooms in the property.
The property features a total of 9 bathrooms, many of which are en-suites.
From the landing is a staircase that takes you to the surprisingly large top floor. This area features exposed wooden beams and plenty of light.
In the past, the rooms have been used as a gym and staff apartment.
